Branwell Brontë’s reputation as the black sheep of the family is well established. He was the waster of opportunities, the loser of jobs, and the one who spent a lot more time in the Black Bull than was necessary – and yet his fellow Haworth villagers may have seen him rather differently. He was well liked and known to have been far more sociable than any of his sisters; described by a contemporary as ‘an extraordinarily talented young man with a hearty passion for life’.
