To celebrate our new exhibition Making Thunder Roar: Emily Brontë, the Brontë Society is delighted to partner with The Leeds Library to host this very special evening. Author Caryl Phillips, Brontë Society Principal Curator Ann Dinsdale and the novelist Michael Stewart explore their relationship with one of the most enigmatic figures in literature, and discuss how they went about crafting their personal responses to Emily as part of this exhibition.
The Leeds Library is the oldest membership subscription library in the country and one of the oldest cultural institutions in Leeds. Started in 1768 by a group of radical thinkers, academics and dissenters, the Library celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2018 through a programme of events, projects and outreach.
Caryl Phillips is the author of numerous books of non-fiction and fiction. Dancing in the Dark won the 2006 PEN Open Book Award, and A Distant Shore won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and is currently Professor of English at Yale University. His latest novel, The Lost Child, was published in 2015.
Michael Stewart is a multi-award winning author who is based in Bradford. His debut novel, King Crow, was published in 2011 and won The Guardian’s Not-the-Booker Award. His most recent novel, Ill Will, was published in spring 2018 and recounts the story of Heathcliff’s lost years.
Ann Dinsdale has worked at the Brontë Parsonage Museum for more than 25 years, and is Principal Curator. She has written extensively on the Brontës, and her books include The Brontës at Haworth, In the Footsteps of the Brontës and Brontë Relics.
