Published by Smith, Elder & Co., 1857 in 2 vols. in one.  1st edition, 1st issue.  Pages. viii + 294, 2 pages of reviews for 2nd edition of Mrs. Gaskell's "Life"; iv + 258, 8pages of Publishers catalogue for the Bronte uniform editions.  Dark green morocco grain cloth, blind stamped borders on both covers, gilt titling & gilt decorative border top/bottom on spine, pale yellow endpapers.  Binder's ticket of Westleys & Co. rear endpaper. 7 3/4 x 5".  (Re-cased with a little repair top/bottom spine - new endpapers - corners bruised - odd slight mark) very good copy. 

First issue, which has several printing errors (vol.1 page 21 the last letters in the last words on lines 1 and 2 are transposed between lines, the letter "p" in "place" is missing from line 3 on page 99 in volume 2 etc).  WISE: 8. Smith: p.162  [719 copies were bound as two volumes in one].
