Summer Festival Weekend - Which novel is Charlotte's true masterpiece?

Jane Eyre or Villette - which is Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece? Tracy Chevalier will chair an evening of debate dedicated to answering this very question, which will feature readings from both novels. Brontë biographer Claire Harman and novelist Joanne Harris will advocate for Jane Eyre, Mr Rochester, Thornfield Hall and mad women in the attic, while biographer Lucy Hughes-Hallett and young adult writer Katherine Langrish will speak in favour of Villette, Lucy Snowe, M. Paul Emmanuel, and ghostly nuns ...

*Maggie O'Farrell was originally scheduled to speak in favour of Jane Eyre with Claire Harman, and Charlotte Mendelson to represent Villette with Lucy Hughes-Hallett, but they are no longer able to attend due to scheduling conflicts. Joanne Harris will advocate for Jane Eyre and Katherine Langrish for Villette.*

Stop press 8 June: We are delighted to announce that actress Maxine Peake will read excerpts from Villette and Jane Eyre at this event.  Tickets cost £12. THIS EVENT HAS NOW SOLD OUT.
