Tracy Chevalier and Maggie O'Farrell in conversation

Novelists Maggie O'Farrell and Tracy Chevalier talk about the nuts and bolts of writing today, and the influence - conscious or unconscious - Charlotte Brontë's groundbreaking novel has had on them. Discussion of techniques - first-person narration, direct address to the reader, the primacy of an 'obscure' person - will be interpersed with readings from their own novels as well as passages they have chosen from Jane Eyre.

Maggie O'Farrell was born in Northern Ireland in 1972, and grew up in Wales and Scotland. Her debut novel, After You'd Gone, was published to international acclaim, and won a Betty Trask Award, while The Hand that First Held Mine won the 2010 Costa Novel Award.
