Creating handwritten copy of Wuthering Heights
We have now finished writing all 34 chapters of Wuthering Heights. We would like to thank the 10,000 visitors who took part in this project during 2017.
The completed manuscript will now be bound into a book, and will be on display at the Museum from 17 February 2018.
Artist Clare Twomey invites visitors to the Museum to create a handwritten copy of Wuthering Heights. The original manuscript for Emily’s famous novel no longer survives, but in this new commission for the Brontë Parsonage Museum, over ten thousand visitors will each be invited to copy one line from the novel into a handmade book to be exhibited during 2018, Emily Brontë’s bicentenary year. Each participant will be gifted a pencil, commissioned by the artist, as a tool for further writing. Clare Twomey hopes that the act of sitting at a table in the house where Emily wrote her novel, and to hold a pencil and write, will build understanding of Emily and her determination to create the one published work of her lifetime.
Clare Twomey is a British artist and a research fellow at the University of Westminster who works with clay in large-scale installations, sculpture and site-specific works. She has exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate, Crafts Council, Museum of Modern Art Kyoto Japan, the Eden Project and the Royal Academy of Arts.
