Of Real Worlds Celebrating 200 years since Emily Brontë’s birth.
In 2018, we will reach the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of literature’s most famous siblings, Emily Brontë who was born just a few hundred yards from the South Square Centre. To raise awareness of this internationally significant part of Thornton’s heritage, we will mark Emily’s birth with exhibitions; events, creative workshops and a birthday party.
To celebrate this cultural milestone, South Square is working with Thornton-based artist Lucy Barker and a range of local community groups and schools to explore Emily Brontë’s literary works. We will learn about the history of Emily’s family and also create new artworks in response to this legacy culminating in an exhibition and celebration event.
Emily Brontë, most known for her only published novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ which is widely regarded as a classic of English Literature, was also a prolific poet. She was described as a ‘metaphysical poet’ often drawing from the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the way that Emily’s work is often described as attending to ‘tremendous themes and minute observations’ of her surrounding natural world, local artist Lucy Barker has been working with local schools to create animations, collage and visual poems which will be presented at the exhibition. Alongside this, the exhibition will feature artist responses to Emily Bronte’s work, particularly evoking her interest in connections between landscape and animals.
Join South Square Centre as we come together to celebrate this significant moment for Thornton Village for a special event marking Emily Bronte’s birthday. The event will feature live music, street food, activities, art, and cocktails.

ADRENA ADRENA is a collaboration between visual artist Daisy Dickinson and drummer E-Da Kazuhisa, previously the drummer of the Japanese noise band Boredoms (WEA Japan, Reprise/Warner Brothers) and currently British electronic/post-rock band Seefeel (Rephlex, Warp Records).? The duo cut a raw blend of drums, noise and organic visual work, featuring in their performances an eight foot white sphere that hangs above Kazuhisa’s drum kit and which Dickinson maps videos on to; her work was described by William Barns-Graham of Fluid Radio as ‘cosmological and transcendental, drawing attention to the wonder of the earth and our sensuality on it’. As a duo, their debut was at the International Festival of Projections in early 2016 and have since performed at The Institute of Contemporary Arts London, End of The Road Festival, Supernormal Festival, Fort Process Festival, Splice Festival, Zorofest in Leipzig and other shows across the UK and Europe, with Acid Mothers Temple and members of Can, Faust, Wire and Bo Ningen. The pair completed a short film in 2016. ‘Man on the Hill’, which features E-da playing drums on fire in the mountains. The film has since been featured on the British Council Film website and in 2016 was nominated for The BFI London Film Festival, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, The London Experimental Film Festival, Vienna Independent Short Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival. https://www.adrenaadrena.com/
DALIAH TOURÉ Daliah Touré is a dance artist based in Leeds. Her interests lie in improvisational practices and working cross-disciplinary. In recent years her choreographic work has focused on creating site specific performances and interrogator the use of scores in performance. Wuthering centres around Kate Bush's song Wuthering Heights. With this participatory performance we are celebrating its 40 year anniversary since its release in 1978. Let's enjoy the Wiley windy melodrama once more.
