May 05th 2020 02:00pm - 02:30pm

A free Tuesday talk

Helen Graham, the courageous, protofeministheroine of Anne’s great novel,  The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, is an artist. Not an amateur ‘lady artist’ who treated painting as an accomplishment, but a professional who used her skills to enable her to support her child and break free from her alcoholic husband. This talk examines the significance of Helen’s occupation in the novel and Anne’s own body of artwork against the shifting and sometimes controversial position of the female artist in the mid-19th century.

Free with admission to the Museum.
