Austen vs. Brontë: Bonnets at Dawn is a weekly literary podcast that compares and contrasts the lives and work of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. The show is hosted by writers Lauren Burke (Team Brontë) and Hannah K. Chapman (Team Austen). Bonnets at Dawn can be downloaded on Stitcher, SoundCloud and iTunes.
Dr Claire O’Callaghan is a Lecturer in English at Loughborough University. Her research focuses on Victorian and neo-Victorian literature and culture, with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, and queerness. Claire is the author of Emily Brontë Reappraised: A View from the Twenty-First Century (2018) as well as Sarah Waters: Gender and Sexual Politics (2017). Claire's current research continues to focus on Emily Brontë and Wuthering Heights, especially in relations to ideas of violence and queerness. However, she also has essays forthcoming on queer masculinities in Jane Eyre, and violence and victim-blaming in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
Isabel Greenberg is an illustrator, writer and comics artist. She is the author of two acclaimed graphic novels The Encyclopaedia of Early Earth (which was nominated for two Eisner awards) and The One Hundred Nights of Hero, both of which were New York Times Graphic Books Bestsellers. Greenberg’s work explores mythology, folklore and imaginary worlds. And it was this interest in world-building which has lead her to her latest project; a graphic novel based around the Brontë juvenilia. This book, currently titled ‘Glass Town’ explores some of the themes and characters of the worlds the Brontë siblings created as children, merging biography alongside a lot of speculation. It will be published by Jonathan Cape and Abrams Books in late 2019.
Amy Rowbottom & Lauren Livesey are, respectively, Curatorial Assistant and Audience Development Officer at the Brontë Parsonage Museum. Their jobs, quite literally, are to talk about and research Emily Brontë. They know how lucky they are.
