June in the Parsonage Garden
‹‹ Back to News & What's On
Yet I recall, not long ago,
A bright and sunny day:
‘Twas when I lived a toilsome life
So many leagues away.

That day along a sunny road
All carelessly I strayed
Between two banks where smiling flowers
Their varied hues displayed.

Anne Bronte “The Bluebell” 1840
We are approaching half way through the year and the Parsonage gardens, both front and back, are now really at their peak, crammed with colour and diversity with hardly any spare space. At this time of year that is exactly how we like our “cottage garden” style to be presented. We certainly hope, in Anne’s words, that the flowers are smiling and displaying their varied hues.
The combined sunny, warm and wet weather has certainly made the vegetation growth quite prolific throughout the month and there has had to be some selective “thinning” work, mainly by Jenny, on a gradual weekly basis. This obviously stops certain plants overpowering others, depriving them of light and moisture and allows others which have yet to flower to come to the fore.
The hues this month have been varied including bright red and yellow poppies, pink campion, delicate shades of columbines and bleeding heart. As we move towards the month end we have both noted that the various roses in the garden are showing a profusion of buds so hopefully in next month’s diary there will be some photographs showing a riotous display. Something to look forward to.

After a difficult spring time trying to improve the damaged lawn after the terrible winter rains, it seems only in June that we have restored it to its normal state after some months of having “ground under repair”. This is very pleasing as we approach the main summer holiday period so that we can now welcome visitors to sit and relax on the lawn and hopefully enjoy the sunny months ahead.

The programme of events at the Parsonage is very full over the coming months and one small extra for those interested in plants, is that we will on Sunday 24 July be holding our annual plant “swap and/or donate” event. So if you are thinking of visiting the Parsonage over the next few weeks and are interested in plants, please come along on that date and visit us on the stall.
