The popular conception of Patrick Brontë is often of a man with hard-held conservative views, a stern Tory and supporter of the Establishment. On closer inspection, however, the story is not quite so clear-cut, as Patrick’s relatively progressive opinions on Catholic Emancipation and political reform often brought him into conflict with his friends and fellow churchmen.
