Delve into Charlotte Brontë’s Shirley in the first-ever Brontë Parsonage Museum read-along event! Across four weekly sessions, we’ll be joined by Dr Jo Waugh of York St John University and Dr Claire O’Callaghan of Loughborough University to explore the novel. Suitable for all readers, we’ll guide you through each chapter, with opportunities to ask questions and share your thoughts on the story as we go along.
Shirley was Charlotte’s second published novel and a perceptive exploration of the industrialising Yorkshire she observed around her. Though set in the Luddite era, many of her characters were inspired by people she knew in her own time, including her sister Emily and best friend Mary Taylor. Shirley provides a powerful analysis of women’s experiences in a changing Britain.
To book, please purchase a ticket here and a link to the recording will be sent out on each weekly date. The final session on 30 October will be live from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The link will be sent with your ticket, and a recording will also be made available afterwards.
Please note, this ticket is only refundable if the event is cancelled, in which case we’ll contact you. We reserve the right to make changes to our programme. All information is correct at the time of booking
